THREE SHIPWRECKS AND FUEL SPILLAGE

Fedra_EP Two cargo ships and a fishing boat were grounded during last week’s storm in the vicinity of the Bay of Algeciras. Fuel spillage from the Liberian-registered Fedra, with 150 tons of it aboard, has already reached the Los Lances beach in Tarifa as well as the beaches at El Rinconcillo, Getares and El Chinarral in Algeciras, though authorities this morning announced that  most of the spillage has been cleaned up and fuel in the water is under control. The Fedra broke in two at Europa Point in Gibraltar, while the Tawe, also Liberian-registered, is stuck on rocks near Punta San García. The rescue of the Fedra crew took on dramatic overtones during the storm, and the ship’s captain was subsequently arrested. More pics below

PETROL FROM USED OIL AND A DEDICATED SCIENCE TEACHER

R8_Biodiesel_SIS_Sean_Johnson We stole the following from Cádiz & Straits News, our friend and colleague David Eade’s news site. We thought it very appropriate for these times.

“Behind one of the buildings at Sotogrande International School (SIS) is a small machine, a number of dustbins, some plastic pipes and a dedicated science teacher.

This believe it or not is where the SIS produces its own diesel fuel. The scheme is the brainchild of science teacher Sean Johnson (photo). He has set up the equipment so that the school’s pupils can learn about re-cycling in a very practical manner.

BIRD FAIR CLOSES WITH 6,000 VISITORS

PICT6235 The organizers of the first International Bird Fair of Tarifa have announced that a total of six thousand people visited the fair, “1,000 above our expectations, though it will take a couple of days to get the exact figures,” added Miguel Ferrer, president of the Fundación Migres. A special award was given to the past President of the Spanish Ornithological Society, Manuel Fernández Cruz, who took the opportunity to criticise local and regional politicians (most of whom were sitting in the front row and whom he called ‘a bit Shiite’ in his opening words), as well as the Fundación Migres, for “the planning chaos being allowed along the whole of the southern coastline, including a proliferation of windmills without any regulations that take the environment, its conservation and the bird life into account.” He also had harsh words for plans to drive the A-48 road through Los Alcornocales Nature Park, “just to bring more people to the beaches.”
