Gibraltar retains cargo ship for polluting

Bunkering(Agencies) The Panama-registered cargo ship Zen 1 is being retained in port by the Rock’s maritime authorities on suspicion of having caused spillage while bunkering in the Bay of Algeciras.> Spillage allegedly occurred yesterday morning; although emergency procedures were set into motion, these had no effect and a line of fuel, which was already solidifying, was spotted close to Poniente beach in La Línea. By midday the fuel had affected some 300m of coastline. Environmentalist groups said it could spread to cover some 800m of beach line and breakwaters in the area.

Meanwhile, the Ship is being detained at North Dock awaiting decisions from Gibraltar maritime authorities. Clean-up crews began working on the pollutant substance at 7.30 this morning.
