MORE PROBLEMS AT SCHOOLS

FeriaMayo2007 070 The ‘strike’ by parents at the secondary school in Estación, Aljibe, was called off yesterday as the result of a written promise from the education authorities to split the class of 37 second-year (2º ESO) students into two. They went back to school today. However, despite promises and assurances to the contrary from the head of the Council for Education of the Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Brenes, there are still problems with a lack of teachers and/or assistants. The most significantly human of these is that of Martín, who suffers from cerebral palsy and has motor problems that preclude him from moving, eating, holding a book and turning pages on his own.

IT WAS GREAT!

It’s taken us a while to recognize the fact that the Talleres por la Paz (‘Workshops for Peace’) held over last week in San Pablo are extraordinary. For many reasons, including laziness, we have never been to any of the workshops, performances, exhibitions or anything else, ever. The event was born as a parallel activity of the International Music Festival of Jimena but has grown independent, as is only right. Prospero was persuaded by his son, via kick up the Khyber, to attend the ‘end of term’ show last Saturday and he can only be grateful. Read the rest of this entry »

ENVIRONMENTALISTS AGAINST NOISE POLLUTION

Ecologistas en Acción (trans: ‘Environmentalists in Action’, a pressure group) yesterday encouraged the fight against acoustic pollution, which “given the lack of sensitivity from municipal authorities, must be acted upon by neighbourhood associations and environmentalists.”
The group alleged that “although everyone has the right to healthy and responsible entertainment, the right to rest is a priority. This is recognized in law and by common sense. If [excess noise] goes unchecked and acoustic pollution is neglected by the authorities, the laws on health, the inviolability of the home and the environment, among others, could be broken.” Read the rest of this entry »

JIMENAPULSE NEEDS HELP

Well, we can’t be everywhere at once; there is only one of us most of the time (no, we don’t use the Royal ‘we’, it just looks better) so we could do with your help, specially over the summer with so many activities and things to attend. What we need, mostly, are photos and information about what’s going on where you are. If you have an upcoming event in your area, or you’ve already had one, please send in a shortish report on it with photos if possible (mobile phone pictures will do, too). And if you’re here on holiday or have had friends or relatives over, we’d love to hear about how it went (with photos for memory’s sake)! Just e-mail us and we’ll do the rest.
