School holidays calendar
The following list of holidays for the school year 2009/2010 is published by the Consejería de Educación (Education Council) of the Junta de Andalucía. It does not include local holidays such as those after ferias, Carnival, etc., which are subject to local Councils. In some cases, holidays have been moved to make sure the days off coincide with a weekend, highly convenient to teachers, not necessarily to parents.> Read the rest of this entry »
Local holiday on Monday 17th
As usual after a feria, this coming Monday is a local holiday in Jimena. This means that Council offices, banks, post offices, and other such places will be closed. As far as we can tell, most shops, bars and restaurants remain open, some only in the morning.
Local holiday in Jimena
We have the people of San Pablo, whose feria it was over the weekend, to thank for making this a local holiday throughout the municipality. Town Hall, banks and other places are closed (as though you hadn’t already known), but supermarkets are open this morning. A matter of luck, really.
What to do over Easter
Time flies at Easter in Spain, where it is called Semana Santa, or Holy Week. There are so many things to do. If you don’t already have one here, start by renting a house or an apartment for a few days, and move on from there. There are Holy Week processions all over the place; Jimena has its own (on Sunday 4th at 11am), but the nearest grand one is in San Roque – and then there’s Sevilla. A wonderful day out very near Jimena is available at Parque Las Aves, or you can always get rid of any stress by going paintballing or take a wonderful walk with magnificent views. There’s polo in Sotogrande to watch, or if the weather’s good, there’s the beach. You can even take a photography course. And then there’s plenty of eating and drinking to be done. You name it, you can do it.
Easter Bank Holidays: what, who, when?
Yes, the darned bunny is here again. For those who haven’t cottoned on yet (including us), you will find that all schools will be closed for the whole week; banks will have reduced hours from Monday to Wednesday (open from 9am to 1.30pm, mostly) and will be closed from Thursday to Sunday; the larger shops will be closed on Friday and Sunday, and possibly on Thursday afternoon, while the smaller local variety will probably be closed on Thursday and Friday, but ask. The Town Halls will be closed from Thursday to Sunday as will the Post Office. (Yes, you can do the maze in the picture if you click on it.)
