CHURROS NOW AVAILABLE

img_8751.jpg

A portable churrería has opened near the bus stop in Jimena, opposite Bar Parada. They are serving up those wonderful concoctions right now. We’ll be back with more on their opening hours… ‘scuse us, they’re getting cold.

They are here until after the holidays, (January 6th), opening in the morning til 2 and then in the afternoon. Yes, that’s what they told us.

A COURSE IN ANDALÚ

If you’re wondering what this is about, please consult several Comments under the Jamón, Jamón article posted earlier. If your sense of wonder hasn’t been lost altogether yet, put yourself in the shoes of a Spanish person having studied English in Spain, and ends up in, say, Newcastle or Glasgow… And if you’re still wondering after that, we’re sorry, there’s no sensible answer.

On the other hand, if you’ve studied Spanish at any time, you will find no resemblance to it above, either. I suppose you just have to live here…

(Thanks to TioJimeno for the tip!)

MIRADAS IS OUT TODAY!

copy-of-miradas-17-compressed.jpgFurther to the advance notice given here on Sunday, the latest issue of MIRADAS DEL SUR is being distributed in Jimena today and tomorrow. Make sure you grab a copy.

JAMÓN, JAMÓN

In case you hadn’t noticed, good old jamón serrano (or any other type, see related article here) is everywhere at this time of year, not that it disappears entirely, of course.

cestanavidad.jpg

It is often part of a cesta de Navidad, or Christmas hamper, and raffled at local bars (are you a lucky winner? Tell us about it!) or given as a corporate present (if you work for that kind of corporation, you should be so lucky!). But, having hit all the bottles in the basket, and eaten all the polvorones (more about these delicacies in another post), what do you do with the ham? There’s a definite art to it, as it should be cut thin to make the best. Here’s how: Read the rest of this entry »

JIMENAPULSE & bBay ON PAPER

copy-of-ab-europa-sur.jpg

In Europa Sur this morning, a note about JimenaPulse and bBay. It reads as follows:

“I WANT TO GIVE BACK SOME OF WHAT I HAVE RECEIVED FROM JIMENA”

Of an English mother and Argentine father, Alberto Bullrich considers himself a ‘Russian salad’, alluding to his mixture, which he does with laughter. He owes his love for Jimena, where two of his children live, to his mother, who lived there for 32 years. He says that what he likes most about the village is its people and what he dislikes most is the incivility of some. Alberto has opened a new Internet website the only objective of which is charity. That is the idea behind bBay, which is different from others in that it is completely free, although a contribution is solicited to benefit La Estrella, the local handicapped association. Bullrich is adamant that he does not intervene in any transaction between buyer and seller.

Alberto is bilingual and understands that there are many foreign residents of Jimena who do not learn Spanish and do not participate in social activities in the community. Of course, he is grateful for how well his mother and he were received in the village. ‘The only thing I’m doing is to give back a little of the much my mother and I have received here,’ says the best-known translator of Jimena.

CAPTION: Alberto has English and Hispanic blood. Speaker of both languages, he has dedicated himself to translation but never stops creating projects that make Jimena bigger.
