FIRE ON TESORILLO ROAD

Incendio Cortijo Nuevo 003 A fire broke out this afternoon at the edge of the road to San Martín del Tesorillo, near Cortijo Nuevo. It burned about 1.5 hectares of scrub land and was fortunately put out quickly by several units of the INFOCA  forest fire service. It is likely the fire started by some idiot throwing a cigarette out of his or her car window. This is not only dangerous but plain stupid. And also against the law. You can be liable for a hefty fine if caught, though that should never be the main reason for not doing it. It’s as well to remember that fires of any kind, for clearing purposes or any other, barbecues included, are strictly forbidden until mid October. (photo: TioJimeno)

SUNDAY AGAINST VIOLENCE ON WOMEN

domestic-violence.gifPRESS RELEASE. Jimena -As this Sunday, November 25th, is International Fight Domestic Violence Day, Jimena’s Social Services department has being holding workshops on women’s health and safety in San Pablo and Estación.
The Department headed by Councillor Mercedes Segovia organized the four-day event in conjunction with the District Women’s Information Centre and the San Pablo Vice Mayor’s office. It covered many aspects of its subject including that of the woman’s body, which is as yet unexplored because of the influence of a massive confluence of studies that present an andro-centric point of view that hides the peculiarities of women.
Other aspects covered by the workshops were public health, rights and responsibilities in terms of health, institutions responsible for health, food and health and environmental problems and health. Read the rest of this entry »

AGADEN’S ‘CASA VERDE’

img_8579.jpg
Agaden, the district’s environmental pressure group, inaugurated its new home last night, which also kicked off an ambitious two-weekend series of lectures, films, exhibitions and activities under the appropriate title of ‘The Environment is Everything’ (See complete programme here).

copy-of-img_8574.jpgThe work carried out on the 100-year-old building on Calle Sevilla just below the Town Hall and once the village school, is trully magnificent. It was carried out, according to the head of the local chapter, Quico Rebolledo, entirely by volunteers working in their free time over several years. The objective is that it should be used for all kinds of social activities and thus provides the town with another place to hold small concerts, movie shows, lectures, exhibitions, etc.

img_8564.jpgThe Agaden community is to be congratulated on their new venture, and let us hope that their basic premise, caring for the environment at the local level, gets the push it needs and deserves.
