NO INCIDENTS AT THE FERIA?

The last line in a wrap-up report in EuropaSur about Jimena’s feria said that it had come to a close without ‘any incidents to be reported’. According to several witnesses, including Prospero’s own son, there were several of these, particularly a wild fight, apparently with knives, on Saturday night/Sunday morning that had the Guardia Civil clearing the way with their batons. As a press release from opposition party Partido Andalucista says, “How many stitches does it take to make an incident?” More to the point perhaps is, how long does the Council think it can keep lying to its voters -always assuming that the newspaper of reference in the Campo de Gibraltar came by their news via the press office at our Town Hall, of course. And if not, how much is it costing us to keep bad news out of the paper? Please Read the rest of this entry »

SILENCE FROM THE COUNCIL

Using this same illustration, and under the title ‘Administrative Silence’, TioJimeno recently published an interesting list of questions that so far have been left unanswered by the Council. We have taken the liberty of translating them (click on ‘Read More’ below) but in doing so, we see there are several matters that have arisen over the last few days with which we have not yet dealt here. We admit to a backlog of local interest news and promise to update as soon as possible. Read the rest of this entry »

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS?

We must once again apologise to our faithfull readers for a lack of postings over the last few days. Problems of a personal nature have conspired to make this unavoidable. Of course, this is the silly season, when all too often ‘news’ is not that at all – we have preferred not to invent any, either. We will be back in the thrust of the latest developments as soon as possible, always supposing there are any…

IT WAS GREAT!

It’s taken us a while to recognize the fact that the Talleres por la Paz (‘Workshops for Peace’) held over last week in San Pablo are extraordinary. For many reasons, including laziness, we have never been to any of the workshops, performances, exhibitions or anything else, ever. The event was born as a parallel activity of the International Music Festival of Jimena but has grown independent, as is only right. Prospero was persuaded by his son, via kick up the Khyber, to attend the ‘end of term’ show last Saturday and he can only be grateful. Read the rest of this entry »

COUNCIL PRIORITIES, SHAMEFUL

As reported here, the latest Council session held on Thursday last rejected a proposal by opposition party Partido Andalucista regarding the reduction of noise in the municipality because it was not considered urgent. However, the only ‘urgent’ matter allowed on the session’s agenda, approved by the majority governing party (PSOE), was the salary of the newest Council member, Juan José Rondón.

While we agree that the new member should be paid for his work, the fact that the Councillor for the Environment, Noelia García, said at the session that ‘we are not touching our noses’ (a Spanish expression meaning ‘we are not doing nothing’) and there was ‘no time for this’ (the Noise Map proposed by the PA, a basic requirement with which to plan an anti-noise campaign, and reported here) obviously means that her priorities are the ‘electioneering plusses’ she favours, including such ‘urgent’ matters as school recycling classes, children’s street and pool parties and other such prorities with which she pads her annual ‘balance’ of activities. Noise does not ‘touch our noses’, it touches our ears and our serenity. (Para una traducción al español de este editorial, pincha en ‘Read more’) Read the rest of this entry »
