DID YOU KNOW…?
…that the Spanish National Anthem is the only one in the world that has no lyrics? A competition is under way to put words to the music known as the Marcha Real (Royal March), which has had over 7000 entries. Some 400 have been pre-selected for a jury presided by the Spanish Olympic Committee, which should be giving its final verdict around mid-December.
According to david.national-anthems.net, this is the story behind it:
“The “Marcha Real” first appeared in a book of military bugle calls dating from 1761, known as the “Marcha Granadera”. In 1770 King Carlos III declared it as the official “honour march”, and was played at events attended by the royal family. It was then soon known as the Royal March (“Marcha Real”).
“The origin of the melody is in dispute. Several traditions claim that it originated in parts of Europe outside Spain (such as France and Germany), and indeed the music is not typical of Spanish music.
“There was a contest held in 1870 to have a new national anthem of Spain, but no winner was declared and the “Marcha Real” remained as Spain’s anthem. There have also been many attempts to compose lyrics for the anthem, but, perhaps in a show of conciliation, none have been officially declared.
“After the anthem was replaced by the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War with “Himno Riego”, the victorious monarchist forces restored the “Marcha Real” by a decree from General Franco in July 1942. In 1997 the royal family issued a decree regulating the official use of the Marcha Real.”

In case you missed it, we started a crossword competition some time back (click here) to boost our camera appeal (click here). There has not been a single entry for the competition nor a single donation, except one very kind reader who handed Prospero his contribution in the street and, of course, our stalwart booster Capricious who took the trouble to create it. All we can say is thank you very much.
CROSSWORD PUZZLE

(CLICK TO ENLARGE AND PRINT OUT)
Let us quote from an e-mail from our stalwart supporter, commentator and good friend, whom Prospero has known for many years but who wishes to remain anonymous:
“I have a cunning plan to start your new camera fund off. ‘Capricious’ is offering €50 to Prospero’s camera fund!! If one of your readers would like to correctly complete the attached crossword (clues in English – answers in Spanish!!), I will donate €50 to the fund!!
(Can either be done by English wanting to practice Spanish or Spanish wanting to practice English!!)”
Now that is what we call initiative, something Capricious has never lacked. It is also what we call having not a lot to do at the office… But mainly what we call it is kindness, another virtue our friend can count on.
However, Prospero has further deviousness and cunning up his own sleeve, so he’s made up a set of rules, and a prize! Read on:
1. Each entry e-mailed to JimenaPulse must be accompanied by a donation of at least €10 to the camera appeal. Simply scan your printed and filled-in copy and e-mail to this address (make sure it’s legible, please!). Arrangements for receipt of the donation will be e-mailed right back. No donation… don’t bother to read any further.
2. The winning entry will be drawn from a hat by someone not associated with JimenaPulse in any way, with photos and story to be published with the announcement of the winner.
3. The winner will get a full dinner for two (maybe even including wine) at one of Jimena’s prestigious gourmet establishments yet to be chosen among our sponsors. (At €10, that’s a cheap meal for two, no?)
Quite seriously, though, we desperately need a new camera to keep this blog going.
