Ximena English Academy opening soon in Jimena
You’ve seen the posters all over town, but you, Dear Reader, didn’t think you needed to learn any more English. But there’s more to Nailah Watson’s enterprising project: a Reading Appreciation and Creative Writing course for 7 to 12-yr-olds, in English, begins on October 9th at the academy’s office in the Cámara de Comercio building (by the fire station). Call Nailah on 671 296 140 for information and registration.
Sancho ees mecking eet agén
(Translation of headline: Sancho does it again) Our good friend Sancho (Tilting at Windmills) is indeed doing it again. This time he’s on about Spanglish. Good subject for many of our readers and well worth reading.
‘Save us from … ‘
Today’s cartoon by El Roto in El País reads: “Save those of us who are drowning, not those who are drowning us.” (Language: the expression con el agua al cuello, translated above as ‘drowning’, literally means ‘with the water at our necks.)
Sex, rock ‘n’ roll, breakfast and grabbing a fag
Sancho is at it again. His blog mentions all of the above in a funny article on language posted this morning on his Tilting at Windmills blog. If you’ve ever had problems with the language, English or Spanish, you’ll be amused by this one. (By the way, does anyone know anything about our old friend Alexander Bewick? He hasn’t posted anything on his Soap Box for a long while. We miss him.)
To our readers from Gibraltar…
We received the following e-mail from a student at the University of Bremen (photo), who is doing his thesis on the ‘linguistic contact’ between English and Spanish on the Rock (i.e. Yanito). Please read the e-mail below, and contact us for his address if you want to participate.>
