Sancho ees mecking eet agén

A TRIBUTE TO MAMA AFRICA

There is nothing Prospero can say about what he feels as a personal loss. Miriam Makeba, Mama Africa herself, has left us. He had the honour of meeting this very brave, if sometimes foolhardy, woman (see previous item) some ten years before this video was recorded. Whatever else may be said of her, and a lot already has, she was a symbol of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and elsewhere. Here she sings her most famous song ‘Pata Pata’ during a performance in the VARA TV-studios in Holland, 1979. Joining her on stage towards the end of the song is her granddaughter Zenzi. Zenzi’s mother (the late Bongi Makeba) is one of the backing vocalists (in the blue dress). Good-bye, and so many thanks, Miriam Makeba (How I wish I could write this last in her Xhosa ‘click’ language!).

A-COUPLE-OF-WORDS-A-WEEK

Spanish Lessons Starting on October 1st, JimenaPulse will bring you a new Spanish word twice a week. Each new word will have a (Castilian) pronunciation guide as well as a translation of its meaning, concentrating on words used locally and/or in the Spanish of Andalucía. We will be guided by your comments and suggestions as to what you need to learn soonest. You could help us by making these right now, so we can create a basis on which to work. We will be grouping a month’s words by subject: Shopping, Building, Driving, etc. Please be aware that this is a major undertaking that will be tested as to your reactions and the number of comments we receive. And, while we’re a it, we’re looking for an advertising sponsor for the page that will remain up forever more as a reference to those who visit us after you do.
