CROWNING GLORY

Last night was the first night of this year’s Feria de Agosto. The main attraction was the crowning of the Queen off the Fair, in her Juvenile and Infants categories. Today’s programme:

Thursday 14th
GIGANTES Y CABEZUDOS
8pm – Street parade by Casa Brotons, accompanied by the Municipal Band and the Armando Herrera Band Association from Algeciras, and more. (The kids love this!)

9.30pm – The Queen of the Fair and her entourage start out towards the very top of the village (La Bodega), where they begin their parade through the streets of the village, on their way to the fairground.
11pm – Dancing in the Municipal marquee, with Orquesta de la Luna.

FERIA POSTER COMPETITION MYSTERY

We thought it was strange… TioJimeno reminds us this morning that the poster for this year’s Feria was supposed to be the result of a competition (see the article on JimenaPulse of May 23rd here), but the one that we wrote about yesterday is on a painting by Antonio Vega, of San Pablo. As TioJimeno asks, “Did Vega win the competition? What was the prize?  Were there no entries, so they chose Vega’s at random? If there was a competition, did no-one like the entries? Will someone please explain what’s going on?”

This year’s Feria de Agosto (August 13th to 17th) posters are up and the programme is being distributed. If you don’t get one through your door, you can always pick one up at the Town Hall – or see it here in English:

JIMENA’S FIRST CARS

Further to our post about Jimena’s fist radio, we find our friends over at TioJimeno publishing an article on the village’s first car. The orginal article appeared in the local magazine called El P@seo, which in turn was the successor to Tio Jimeno, a labour of love by Ricardo Gómez and yet a feisty paper predecessor of what is today Jimena’s ‘blog of reference’. The story goes back to 1934 and was told to Práxedes Gómez by Maestro Zarza, both departed. But back to the first car: the Ford arrived in the village in 1918 at the hands of a man from Ronda who went by the name of Guancho Read the rest of this entry »

NOVENA IN SEPTEMBER

First we have to get over the Feria de Agosto, and three weeks later we come to the Novena in Estación, which this year takes place on September 5th, 6th and 7th (always the first weekend in September). Ostensibly a religious celebration, there are a lot of other activities although the main ‘attraction’ is when Our Lady Queen of the Angels (Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles, photo) is paraded by the devout through the streets of Estación. To see some of last year’s goings on and an explanation of what it’s all about, click here. We will publish the full programme closer to the event.
