TONIGHT AT THE FESTIVAL

CLASSICAL MUSIC
SANTUARIO, 8.30 PM, €20
José Luis Nieto is a brilliant Spanish pianist and composer of the new generation of virtuoso performers appearing all over the world.
He was scheduled to appear as leader of the Moscow Simphonietta chamber orchestra, but these will not be performing because they were unable to obtain visas for Spain, alas. It is understood that last minute changes, though, do include a chamber orchestra.

DHIRA

NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL ROCK, FAIRGROUND, 00.30, FREE

, the local rock band that has improved over the years.

DIEGO ‘EL CIGALA’ is a classical, though innovative, flamenco singer who has appeared at the Festival before. He then went on to record a wonderful disc with Bebo Valdés, one of the Trova Vieja veterans who has since died (his son, Chucho Valdés closes out the festival this year).
TYPICAL’ CUBAN MUSIC AT ITS BEST
GRUPO COMPAY SEGUNDO
This is the group that accompanied Compay Segundo in tours throughout the world. They are the old Cuban school, and are part of what has become an entire export industry for the beleaguered island.
EL GUAYABERO is another member of the old Cuban school (Trova Vieja) though perhaps less well-known. He looks very serious onstage but his accute sense of irony comes across the footlights.
