NOVENA – FIRST NIGHT

RIDERS CAME FROM ALL OVER THE PLACE
The first major event organized by the Peña Caballista ‘El Estribo’ was an enormous success, contributing to make this charming little feria even more so. There were riders from everywhere and lots of onlookers. Other things went on, too, like the coronation of the Queen of the Fair, who arrived on scene with her Ladies-in-Waiting aboard a colourful float. The kids had a great time on the rides and everyone went home late, but happy.
TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME INCLUDES A DONKEY RACE AT 8.30 (ish)

FIESTA DE LA NOVENA, ESTACIÓN

The annual Novena, as it’s called, begins tonight at 7.30 with the coronation of the young Reina, plus several other activities that you can read about in the official programme (below) if you can find one.

Among other things, the Peña Caballista El Estribo is holding a competition (8.30) for the best-dressed rider and will then be parading through the streets of Estación. And there’s music and dancing at their Novena headquarters, and probably everywhere else as well. Then there’s a donkey race tomorrow, Saturday, at 8.30 pm… (You can see El Estribo’s programme here). There are also culinary competitions, children’s rides, stalls of all kinds and the 26th Jimena Flamenco Festival tomorrow, Friday 31st, at 10.30 pm.
This is one of Jimena’s most popular festivities that culminates on Sunday with a procession of the Patron Saint, Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Our Lady of the Angels) on Sunday evening.

FUN DAY AT THE FERIA

It’s not about winning, it’s about taking part, we’re told. It’s also about having fun in the water on a hot Sunday at the feria. It’s about cheering your friends on, and looking for Mom in the crowd. Little people and large, youngsters and not-so-youngsters-any-more had a great time. And most of them got a medal after all. It’s about taking part…

SUN DAY AT THE FERIA

They came in twos, and then in threes.

They came from near, and they came from far.

With mothers to help, and Godmothers to hold.

They came to eat and they came to rest.
The essence of a Domingo Rociero is to meet up with friends you may not have seen for a while – or just a moment ago. Conversation and good cheer is what it’s about on a sun day at the feria.
