WE ARE INSIGNIFICANT (2)
Just to put all his readers at rest, as it were, Prospero has not gone peculiar (he was that to start with, he hears you say). He also hears you ask, What the hay has this to do with Jimena? Nothing, except that focusing almost exclusively on a small village in the mountains of Southern Spain tends to reduce one’s horizon, so he thought he’d just expand it a bit… And the reason he chose Mondays for this series is that it seemed a good idea with which to start the week.
In last Monday’s first episode (click here to see it) we were on about how insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things. Here’s some news: we are even more insignificant today, as we promised. Even in our own galaxy.
Okay, you can go off to work now and think about what you’re going to tell the boss. On second thoughts, wait until you’ve seen the whole series (appearing Mondays).

Step 4 (see here) left family and friends gathered around the table, chopping up onions, garlic, pumpkins and courgettes to be used as part of the ingredients for chorizo.
Step 5 takes place the following morning, when the chorizo ingredients continue to be prepared by the women while the men carry on cutting up the carcass. Read the rest of this entry »
HEALTH CARE IN JIMENA (1)

THE DEVELOPMENT OF HEALTH CARE IN JIMENA (1952 – 2007)
by CURRINI
I had to go to the medical centre in Jimena for the first time the other day. As I sat waiting, looking around at the cleanliness, the size of the place and the number of people being served in this modern facility, I remembered how public health used to be in the village where I was born and raised. My first memory was of the capacity for suffering we were handed down from our parents, not to mention the resignation we showed for those illnesses and accidents that beset us all little by little. WE ARE INSIGNIFICANT (1)
Yes, in the grand scheme of things we are pretty insignificant, according to many philosophers and thinkers. The Buddhist religion has personal humility as a major goal; in fact, it is a goal in most if not all of the major religions of the world. Lest you think Prospero has gone peculiar, please be assured that this short series is only an attempt to get a perspective on the daily drudge. And sharing the thought with his by now puzzled readers…
They’ve discovered more planets, of course, but these are some of the ones we learned about in school, if Prospero remembers correctly, it’s so long ago. We look pretty big, don’t we? By next Monday we will have shrunk a little. Watch this space (forgive the pun)!

Steps 1, 2 and 3 saw the catching, killing and butchering of the pig. See it here.
Step 4 has the work divided: the men will continue classifying each part of the pig (bacon, lard and guts, for one), while the women will wash out the latter for later stuffing and the eventual chorizos. Read the rest of this entry »
