At a meeting held this afternoon at Jimena’s Instituto, the parents of students of 2º ESO decided they would not allow their children to attend class until the present class of 38 is split into two (see Back to school problems – yet again!). Parents will meet tomorrow morning at 9.15 to hand in their justificantes (absence notifications) to the School Secretary.>
The maximum number of students allowed by law under one tutor is 30, with a margin of an extra three arriving during the school year. The teachers, who called the meeting, explained how, with three teachers missing from the staff, this would affect the entire school, including those at the higher Bachillerato levels, where there are also overcrowding problems aside from teachers having to work some (unpaid) overtime.
Among other things, the Parents Association (AMPA in its Spanish acronym) also decided to make the matter known to the media, to write to the Ombudsman, and to take legal advice. It was also said that Jimena Council, the Mayor in particular, are doing the best they can with letters and phone calls to the authorities, but that as yet this has no effect.
