Another fire at El Cuartón in less than a month

fuego_cuartón (Agencies) Another fire broke out shortly after 7pm yesterday at the Northern part of the El Cuartón urbanization, just over the hill past Algeciras, though in the municipality of Tarifa. they did not have to evacuate any because a strong Levante wind drew the flames away. Nevertheless several residents preferred to leave their homes voluntarily and watch the proceedings from the urbanization’s main road.

The fire was pretty well under control by midnight, though two fire units remained behind in case the wind fanned what embers were left. There is no word yet as to how the fire might have started.

This is not the first time this has happened at the urbanization Several residents have expressed concern about the origins of these fires, the last of which (see JimenaPulse item here) appeared to have been set intentionally.

cuarton_pancarta Long time residents (some being well known to Prospero in a previous life) have been complaining for some time about trees being cut down and little forestry maintenance being carried out. The protest banner at the entrance to El Cuartón (photo) reads: ‘No to tree cutting! No to urban abuses! Let’s save the Guadalmesí River!’
