4000 turn out for end of feria bulls in San Roque

ToroAguardiente2009_ES (Agencies) Some four thousand people turned up at the bullring in San Roque yesterday at dawn. It was the traditional baiting of the bull known as Toro del Aguardiente, which bears no resemblance to the formal bullfight.>

The tradition apparently goes back to medieval times but its ‘modern’ version is proven in 1649, when the inhabitants of Gibraltar used to travel in procession to where San Roque is today to honour Our Lady Mary the Crowned. As was the custom, with religious services over, the fiesta began, almost always with a bull taking part in the proceedings.
