About Jimena de la Frontera, the province of Cadiz and Spain as a whole, focused on this small village in the mountains

The ‘Botafumeiro’ in Santiago de Compostela

Today is the day of Saint James. He is known in Spain as Santiago (Saint Iago) and is the Patron Saint of Galicia.  This giant incense burner, known as the ‘Botafumeiro’, is lit and ‘flown’ along the aisle in Iago’s honour in the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, the end of the Camino de Santiago.  It is an impressive sight. (Students of Spanish needn’t worry if they don’t understand a word on the video: it’s Galego, or Galician, more akin to Portuguese than to Spanish. Looking for a Jimena connection? There is none, except perhaps to honour those from Jimena and anywhere else who have done the Camino.)
