(Press release)The Children’s Orchestra of Jimena, directed by David Higginbottom, made its debut yesterday at the Casa de la Cultura ‘Leopoldo de Luis’ in Jimena (see announcement here). The orchestra was born 8 months ago from the Municipal Music Schools and is aimed at kids of 7 to 12 who are learning to play such instruments as piano, violin, cello and flute. Their first public appearance offered a programme of>
traditional and classical tunes, which delighted an audience consisting not only of the children’s family members (there were a couple of tears) but also of people interested in this project.
Prior to its premiere public concert, the orchestra had toured local schools and the challenge now is to keep practicing so that it can be an important part of next year’s Music Festival.
Participation in the Municipal Music Schools offers the possibility of taking exams from the Royal Academy of Music in England. A group of Jimena children have already taken some exams there.
(Prospero note: This is a project to which resident expats in Jimena and our surroundings ought to offer our full support, don’t you think?)
