Are the ‘chiringuitos’ saved?

chiringuito Further to our item about coastal laws being applied by the Ministry of the Environment and the possible disappearance of Spanish chiringuitos (beach bars), the matter has sparked angry rows in the Congress, as well as support for their continued existence from all parties.>

Before he left, the former President of the Junta de Andalucía and now a Minister in Zapatero’s government in Madrid, Manuel Cháves, said that he would fight for the beach bars’ survival as they were an important tourist attraction. He is supported by his successor at the head of the Junta, José Antonio Griñán.

For his part, Javier Arenas, the head of the Partido Popular in Andalucía, expressed his support “with all the consequences” for the beach bar owners and called for the Ministry of the Environment to renew all the concessions that are still pending.
