Andalucía Tennis Experience tournament

CarlaSuarez (Agencies) The Andalucía Tennis Experience women’s tournament was held in Marbella’s Puente Romano Hotel last week, perhaps as a preamble to the upcoming Davis Cup elimination round to be played at the Puerto Banús bullring in July. After a hard week of play the final saw Serbian Jelena Jankovic up against Spain’s own Carla Suárez (photo).>

Jankovic, who is ranked number four in the world and was second favourite to win the tournament after Serena Williams, who was knocked out mid-week, beat Suárez 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and won her first title of the present season. But it wasn’t an easy win for the Serbian, who lost the second set to Suárez. The tough little Spaniard, whom some call the female Nadal, fought hard, obviously keen to make her mark on her home turf.
But in the third set Suárez couldn’t overcome an opponent she has never beaten and was responsible for her being knocked out of the Roland Garros in Paris and at Wimbledon.
There was to be no win for Spain in the doubles competition either. The Spanish pairing of Anabel Medina and Virginia Ruano were beaten by Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolsky from Poland 6-3, 6-3 and a match that lasted little over an hour.
