Builders on the run

edificio_abandonado A report in El País begins: “Whereabouts unknown. Owners of small building firms disappear, leaving their workers in the lurch.” It goes on to say that the credit crunch brings out the true ethics of these small businesses. Labourers turn up for work to find the site closed down without notice. Telephones go unanswered and offices are locked up from one day to another.>

Buyers throughout the country, few though there are, are left having made down payments and signed mortgages, only to find that the builder cannot be found.

Many of these small firms are subcontractors to the larger developers, who have left them in the lurch, too, owing much larger sums. The report goes on to demonstrate the domino effect of the global financial situation.
