This was sent in by Simon, probably to point out that even if you learned Spanish at the best school in Valladolid (where it is said they speak the best King’s Spanish), you might well have problems in Andalucía and our local version thereof. But Prospero has a story about language, too>
About 15 years ago he was in charge of organizing groups of young people from the UK on their last weeks of rehab. They came out to Jimena to work for the Council in exchange for board and lodging ( this part is another long story for another day). At a welcome meeting, and depending where exactly they were from (usually Glasgow or Newcastle), Prospero would say, “I am neither deaf nor stupid, but please be aware that I haven’t been to the UK for at least 15 years and even then I’ve never been North of Colchester… I would be very grateful if you could make an effort to be understood, as I will make an effort to understand.” And do you know, they all did and we got on perfectly. Goes to show.
