Imaginative headline that, but read more as to why. You see, Prospero and son were very kindly invited by Zen Marriott on a day out with her friends to go whale watching in Tarifa yesterday (hence no posts); to whom many thanks for a great day. It was a wonderful experience that started early in the morning to get to the boat by 10.30. We were very lucky, too, as we got to see some orcas (a.k.a. killer whales, though they’re actually the largest kind of dolphins). After over three hours with the excellent crew from the Frimm Foundation, during which we had the company of other dolphins as well, we repaired to Bolonia for a wonderful lunch. This is definitely one of the things one must do at this time of year. The people from Frimm, a Swiss foundation dedicated to the research and conservation of marine mammals, especially the whales and dolphins in the Strait of Gibraltar, are committed and professional, and the dolphins were charming as always.
As you will see from the slide show, we were pretty close to the Moroccan side, where the coastline is very obviously being spoilt in the same way as Spain’s. There is also a photo of a small Moroccan fishing boat, whose occupants, undoubtedly used to this, pointed us towards the orcas. These mammals are a treat to see here as they’re not very frequently sighted. They are very impressive, though somewhat camera shy. Actually, it’s not their fault: every time something was sighted out in the water, the entire contingent of tourists scrambled over to the other side of the small boat. This does not make for good photography, but it is a sign of respect to those magnificent animals with which we are more than happy to comply.
Please do find out more about available trips and a great deal about all these wonderful creatures we can so easily take for granted (for how long?). Go to the Frimm Foundation website for more info in English, Spanish or French.
