GOTCHA!

DECEMBER FOOL!

Yes, today is the equivalent of April Fool in Spain. Something to do with Saint Innocent, whose day it is, though we’re not sure why people play jokes on each other. The figure above gets stuck on your back if you’re caught out. Did you get caught out by a Spanish neighbour? Tell us about it.
(And no, JimenaPulse is NOT closing down…)

Suena un poco raro gastar inocentadas a quien no sabe qué significa el día… ¿Cómo quedaría si en April Fool’s Day (creo que es la noche del 1, ¿no?), se gastaran inocentadas aquí?… mejor no probar :-(

TRANSLATION OF ABOVE COMMENT:
“It sounds a bit funny to play jokes on people who don’t know what the day means… How would it look if they played jokes on us on April Fool’s (it’s the night of April 1st, isn’t it?)… better not try. :(

ANSWER:
Thanks for the comment, J.A., but would you try to play jokes in England on December 28th? Probably not. The difference, I feel, is that we foreigners have chosen to live here, in Spain, and should do our utmost to adapt to the customs of our chosen place of residence, the same way as people choosing to live in the UK might be expected to adapt to things there.
I’m aware that this debate is ongoing among foreigners and locals alike – and it is one of the favourite bees in my bonnet, as most of my readers will attest.
However, I have read many a time that Spaniards take themselves much too seriousy and for the most part, I agree (but then, I believe the entire human race takes itself far too seriously, not just Spaniards and myself included). I have had more healthy, good fun in Spain, with Spaniards, than anywhere else I’ve lived – and I’ve lived in many countries.
So what’s wrong with having good clean fun, as long you don’t hurt anybody, physically or otherwise? LET’S HAVE SOME FUN! Or ¡VIVA EL FUN! :)
