EU TO INVESTIGATE GIBRALTAR BUNKERING
The Petitions Commission of the European Union has accepted a request by Spanish environmental lobby Verdemar-Ecologistas en Acción to investigate bunkering activities in the Strait of Gibraltar. (Photo shows bunkering in the Bay of Algeciras)
Marcin Libicki, President of the Petitions Commission, said in a press release that, having studied the petition by the environmental pressure group, “the matters that are raised are within the EU’s framework of activities,” and is therefore requesting a preliminary investigation by the European Parliamentary Commission as well as those for the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, in order to “have their opinions.”
Verdemar-Ecologistas en Acción presented Brussels with a statement “against the Government of Gibraltar” on August 30th, 2007, as a result of the New Flame accident, requesting “penal responsibility” from Gibraltar. The same statement also denounced the bunkering activities carried out by Gibraltar, which is faced by “our defenseless [Spanish] government”.
