I’m pleased to see that the majority of, I assume, expats, feel safe enough here in Jimena. Certainly,compared to any major town or city in the UK,our little town is a safe haven. My daughter and myself, however, have found it increasingly difficult to go out in the evenings alone, say, to the bank (to check how poor we are!) because of the gangs of men standing on the corners of the Paseo, near the taxi ranks and the bars. These people, although not aggressive, are quite intimidating and both of us have stopped going to the Paseo in the summer because of the comments hurled at my daughter. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling this way but there’s little we can do. Do we want to risk being seen as racist when we are no more Spanish than they?
